As regulatory pressure on digital asset custody grew, institutional investors began demanding the same custody controls, audit capabilities and client experience standards they expected from traditional financial services. The third-party wallet infrastructure Arkenstone was relying on was not meeting those expectations neither in terms of security architecture, compliance capability, nor client experience.

Zenith Vault was severely restricted by complex key management hurdles and high churn rates during user onboarding into the self-custody Web3 sector. Their legacy white-label setups completely failed to deliver the native hardware isolation required to protect user private keys, leaving them exposed to remote key-extraction vulnerabilities and driving high dropout rates during manual seed phrase generation. Furthermore, the platform lacked an integrated cross-chain synchronization layer and automated transaction screening, forcing users through slow transaction loops and exposing them to malicious drainer contracts, which prevented Zenith Vault from capturing high-intent capital from modern institutional investors.

Hierarchical Key Management Architecture
The security foundation of any institutional custody platform is its key management architecture. Markeltree developed a hierarchical deterministic key management system in which private keys were derived, encrypted and stored across geographically distributed hardware security modules. Key sharding distributed cryptographic control across multiple custodians so that no single entity internal or external could access client funds without multi-party authorisation. Key generation and signing procedures were established to meet institutional custody security standards in compliance with relevant regulatory requirements.
Multi-Signature Transaction Approval Workflows
Institutional clients required a mechanism for configuring approval thresholds for transactions above defined sizes. Markeltree developed a multi-signature workflow engine that enabled each client to configure their own transaction approval process, specifying the number and type of approvers for different transaction size categories. Approval requests were submitted through an authenticated mobile and desktop application, with configurable time-locks and automatic escalation for approvals approaching expiry.
Multi-Chain Asset Support
Arkenstone's institutional clients held digital assets across multiple blockchain networks. Markeltree developed a multi-chain wallet architecture supporting all major asset networks within a single unified custody interface. All digital assets were managed from one dashboard, with blockchain-specific transaction handling abstracted away from the client experience.
Compliance and Audit Infrastructure
Institutional custody requires documentation standards comparable to traditional financial services. Markeltree built a compliance layer that recorded all key operations, transaction initiations, approvals and custody actions with immutable timestamps and operator identities. Transaction audit trails could be exported in structured formats compatible with Arkenstone's regulatory reporting workflows. Automated transaction monitoring was also integrated to identify patterns requiring compliance review prior to transaction processing.
White-Label Client Portal and Reporting
Arkenstone's institutional clients required a custodial experience consistent with Arkenstone's professional market positioning. Markeltree designed and built a fully white-labelled client portal with real-time portfolio valuation across all held assets, detailed transaction history with full audit trail, customisable reporting for tax and accounting purposes, and a secure document exchange system for custody agreements and compliance documentation.
