The trade finance process relied on a chain of trust among buyers, sellers, and lenders, with each party needing to verify authentic documentation, confirm transaction state, and release funds at specific milestones. This chain was managed through email threads, PDF document exchange, and manual status updates recorded in a shared spreadsheet a system where version conflicts, missed milestone notifications, and delayed fund releases were common and expensive.
Markeltree was engaged to build a decentralised application that would replace the fragmented document-heavy trade finance workflow with a transparent, trustless platform for all transaction parties.

The Challenges

Nexis Ledger was heavily restricted by extreme interface latency and poor Web3 wallet connectivity that led to severe transaction drops during sudden network traffic spikes. Despite their robust underlying smart contracts, the company legacy application completely failed to display real-time pool metrics or handle failed RPC node requests cleanly, alienating non-technical retail users with confusing multi-chain asset onboarding steps. Furthermore, the platform lacked an optimized client-side middleware infrastructure to translate obscure cryptographic error codes or adapt to mobile Web3 browsers, causing high bounce rates that prevented the startup from capturing competitive total value locked (TVL) allocations.

Decentralised Application Architecture
The DApp architecture Markeltree built was anchored on a single source of truth: an on-chain transaction record shared by all parties in a trade finance transaction. Every document submission, milestone verification, and fund release was captured on-chain with cryptographic evidence of each state change, providing an immutable event chain that could not be altered. Role-specific interfaces gave each participant access limited to their position in the transaction structure a significant departure from the previous shared spreadsheet and email chain model.
Document Hashing and Authenticity Verification
Alteration and duplication of shipping documents, letters of credit and invoices are the most common forms of trade finance fraud. Markeltree added a document hashing layer to the DApp that created a cryptographic hash of each document when it was added to a transaction and recorded it on-chain. Any subsequent alteration to a document produced a new hash that could not be verified against the on-chain record, giving all parties a way to confirm document authenticity without relying on a trusted third party.
Programmable Milestone and Fund Release Logic
The most operationally costly part of the existing process was the multi-party confirmation required at each transaction milestone, causing delays in fund releases. Markeltree encoded milestone release conditions directly into the DApp's on-chain logic. Funds were released automatically as soon as conditions were met including confirmation of bill of lading receipt or customs clearance documents from relevant counterparties. Disputed milestones triggered an on-chain resolution process rather than defaulting to email negotiation.
Multi-Party Counterparty Onboarding
A DApp serving multiple counterparty types across multiple markets required a flexible onboarding architecture. Markeltree developed an identity and credentialing layer enabling buyers, sellers, financiers and logistics verifiers to participate in transactions through a verified wallet connection process. Role-based transaction access allowed each party to view only what was relevant to their position, while a complete transaction history across all parties was maintained on-chain.
Financier Analytics and Portfolio Dashboard
Working capital providers on the platform needed a portfolio-level view of active transactions, counterparty exposure, and milestone status across their funded book of business. Markeltree developed an analytics dashboard that streamed real-time transaction status data from the on-chain record, giving financiers a live view of portfolio performance and predictive visibility into upcoming milestone events and fund release schedules without requiring manual status updates from Bridgeport.
