About Verdant Agricultural Exports
Verdant Agricultural Exports specialises in the procurement and distribution of certified organic and sustainably raised agricultural products coffee, cacao, spices and specialty grains from smallholder farming cooperatives in Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa to premium food brands, retailers and food service companies in North America and Western Europe.
Verdant's business model depended on verified provenance and sustainability credentials. Premium buyers were increasingly requesting documentary evidence, and EU regulators were beginning to mandate farm-level traceability under incoming supply chain due diligence legislation. Verdant's existing tracking relied on paper records that passed through multiple intermediaries from farm to buyer, with each party re-authenticating and copying documents a process with significant authenticity gaps and chain of custody weaknesses.
Verdant engaged Markeltree to integrate blockchain-based traceability into its existing supply chain operations without replacing the supplier management and logistics systems already in place.

The Challenges
Every project starts with real problems. Here are the core challenges we tackled for this engagement.
CoreChain Ledger was severely constrained by manual reconciliation gaps, high administrative auditing friction, and constant data manipulation risks across their cross-border shipping networks. Standard software integrations failed to provide a reliable, real-time single source of truth for third-party shipping logs and commercial freight documentation, causing costly processing delays and high compliance vulnerabilities. Furthermore, a reliance on centralized databases left them vulnerable to data-tampering attempts and tracking errors, while the absence of a tamper-proof digital verification system hindered their ability to win high-volume institutional shipping contracts or assure global port authorities of full data integrity.

Core approach & deliverables
A breakdown of the core components built and delivered for this project.
Blockchain Integration Architecture for Existing Systems
The supply chain's operational technology cooperatives, processors, logistics partners was proven and established and could not be replaced. Markeltree designed a blockchain integration architecture with data connectors that logged events to the blockchain in real time from each source system, without requiring participating suppliers or logistics partners to adopt new software. The blockchain layer served as an audit trail of what operational systems had already captured not an additional data entry burden or a parallel collection process.
Farm-Level Origin Record and Cooperative Onboarding
Achieving farm-level traceability required engaging smallholder farming cooperatives in environments with low connectivity and limited technology infrastructure. Markeltree built a lightweight mobile tool that enabled cooperative administrators to register farm-level harvest data, certification documents and batch identifiers using basic smartphone features, with offline functionality that synced to the blockchain upon reconnection. Every harvest batch was assigned an on-chain identifier traceable to the farm, cooperative, harvest date and certification status.
Chain of Custody Event Recording
Each change of custody in Verdant's supply chain was documented as an on-chain event associated with the batch identifier created at origin. Scanning batch identifiers at each handoff point recorded the identity of the scanning party, a transfer timestamp and location on-chain. This created a single, uninterrupted chain of custody documentation from farm to buyer that could be independently audited by any authorised party.
Certification and Compliance Document Anchoring
Organic and sustainability certifications were the most fraud-susceptible documents in Verdant's supply chain. Markeltree created a document anchoring system that generated a cryptographic hash of each certification document at the time of issuance and stored it on-chain alongside the certified batch records. Any party receiving a certification document could verify its hash against the on-chain record to confirm authenticity independently, without accessing Verdant's internal systems or relying on third-party authentication services.
Buyer-Facing Transparency Portal
Premium food buyers and retail partners needed to share traceability information with their own customers and compliance teams. Markeltree built a buyer transparency portal enabling authorised partners to access complete farm-to-delivery provenance records for any Verdant product batch including every custody stage from farm origin to final delivery in a clean, exportable format compatible with the buyer's sustainability reporting and regulatory disclosure obligations.
Key Outcomes & Impact
Blockchain integration layer connecting existing supplier management and logistics systems to an immutable on-chain supply chain record without replacing source platforms.
Farm-level harvest registration tool with offline capability enabling smallholder cooperative participation in low-connectivity environments.
Continuous chain of custody record from farm origin through every custody transfer to final buyer delivery.
Certification document anchoring system providing cryptographic authenticity verification for organic and sustainability credentials.
Buyer-facing transparency portal delivering exportable farm-to-buyer provenance records compatible with sustainability reporting and regulatory disclosure requirements.

Markeltree changed the nature of the conversation we can have with buyers. Our supply chain story was always true, but we could only tell it with words and paper certificates that buyers had to take on faith. Now anyone can verify it themselves from a record that no one can alter.
